U.S. Award Aims to Raise Awareness of Water-Related Issues Among Today's Youth
Water-borne diseases resulting from a lack of clean drinking water and poor sanitation kill more children each year than any other illness in the world. By 2030, experts estimate that three billion people will live in areas of severe water shortage. In an effort to raise awareness of these issues and others related to water, and to encourage further exploration of solutions to these problems, last year we established the ITT Award for Excellence in Student Water Journalism, a program to recognize aspiring journalists. By encouraging future journalists to report on water and the environment, ITT aims to move these issues to the top of agendas in communities around the world.
The award is administered in partnership with the Quill and Scroll Society (http://www.uiowa.edu/~quill-sc/), an international organization founded in 1926 by a group of high school advisers for the purpose of encouraging and recognizing individual student achievement in journalism and scholastic publication.
Currently enrolled high school students are invited to enter the competition for the 2008 award by submitting an article or report on a water-related, environmental issue. Finalists will compete for the national prize, which includes:
- An Expense-Paid Trip to Stockholm, Sweden to attend World Water Week in August of 2008
- $1,000 Scholarship
- Opportunities for publication in water-related media
- Download a PDF of the Entry Form [356 K]
The deadline for entries is May 28, 2008. For questions or additional information, please write to ITT@peppercom.com or quill-scroll@uiowa.edu.
