A nautical compass consists of a directional card floating in oil,
with a magnet attached to the bottom. The magnet allows the
card to align itself with magnetic north, but the earth’s lines of
magnetic force exert a pull of their own, causing the card to dip
and compromising the compass performance. Helmholtz Coils
solve the problem, but Rule engineers knew there had to be a
less time-consuming solution.
